What this course is about

How data gets from one device to another, and how to design the networks that carry it.

1

How data moves

  • OSI & TCP/IP layers
  • Transmission & error control
  • Framing with HDLC
2

How networks connect

  • LANs, WLANs & WANs
  • IP fragmentation & ICMP
  • Internetworking & routing
3

How you design one

  • Classless addressing & subnetting
  • IPv6
  • Packet Tracer & Wireshark

It builds on SKEE2073 Signals & Systems and SKEE3533 Principles of Communication: from one signal on one link, to a whole network.

Course learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to…

CLO1
ANALYZE the function of each layer in the communication model, and choose suitable network types for given needs.

Assessed by: Quiz · Test 1 · Final exam

CLO2
ANALYZE classless IP addressing with correct subnet allocation and minimal address wastage.

Assessed by: Quiz · Test 2 · Final exam

CLO3
ANALYZE LAN traffic performance and propose optimisation strategies with justified reasoning.

Assessed by: Test 2 · Final exam · Project 1

CLO4
DESIGN a simple network in Cisco Packet Tracer that meets given performance and connectivity requirements.

Assessed by: Project 2

How we'll learn

Before class

Read the notes

Flipped classroom: study the week's notes on e-learning first.

→
In class

Solve problems

Active learning: short activities open and close each session.

→
After class

Reflect

Post-class tasks, plus a weekly reflection on e-learning.

→
All semester

Build projects

Analyse LAN performance, then design a network in Packet Tracer.

Tools you'll use

Wireshark

Capture real packets and see the layers in action.

wireshark.org

Cisco Packet Tracer

Build and test network designs. You'll need it for Project 2.

When in UTM, do as the UTMians do

House rules

Manage your time

Class activities take 5 to 20 minutes.

Reflect every week

Post your weekly reflection on e-learning.

Learn together

Collaborate, ask, and help each other.

Attend at least 80%

Keep your attendance above 80%.

Dress the part

Follow the UTM dress code.

No bonus marks

Every mark comes from the assessments.

Academic integrity

Copied work gets zero marks, and may lead to disciplinary action by the Faculty.

  • ✓ Work individually, unless a task is explicitly a group activity.
  • ✓ Explain what you read in your own words. Short quotes are fine if marked as quotes.
  • ✗ Retyping a source and just citing it is not enough.
  • ✗ Don't do someone else's work, or lend yours to be copied.
